Mobile phone and handsets market shares

World sold more than 32.2 million smart mobile devices in the second quarter of this year. There is an increase of 16 percent over the same quarter last year. Smart mobile phones account for 11 percent of the total mobile market.

-- Although sales in the second quarter amounted to 64 million units, an increase of 22 per cent, growth rate is actually lower than 2007, "said Roberta Cozza, analyst at Gartner.

Economic slowdown affects the market by reducing consumer investments and lower demand for electronics products.

The U.S. is growing fastest and has a growth rate of 79 percent in the second quarter. United States accounts for 25 percent of global sales. Growth in Europe is 21 percent. Asia has a decrease of 24 percent, and in Japan sales fell 5 percent.

The largest supplier is Nokia, which has 48 percent of
market. It is a reduction compared with the corresponding period of last year when the figure stood at 51 percent. The company will first of all increase the breadth of its product range, according to Gartner.

Research In Motion, the manufacturer of the Blackberry, took a share of 17 percent, almost a doubling of last year's 9 percent.

HTC and Sharp notes a share of each of 4 percent, followed by Fujitsu at a femteplats, with 3 percent of the market. Other vendors took along a share of 24 percent.

Among the suppliers that are not among the first five, we find Apple, whose share dropped from 5.3 percent the first quarter, to just 2.8 percent in the second quarter. Above all, because of major changes in sales before the launch of the Iphone 3G in June. During the rest of the year it is expected a significant increase in sales.

On the Symbian operating system, leading with 57 percent of sales, compared to 66 percent over the corresponding period of last year. The decline is due to reduced sales in Japan, as well as increased competition from other operating systems.

Research In Motion is second with 17 percent, followed by Microsoft Windows Mobile with 12 percent and Linux by 7 percent. Source IDG
